What is Hitofude-ryu (One-stroke Dragon)?

As the name suggests, a Hitofude-ryu is a dragon whose body is drawn in a single brushstroke without interruption, imbued with wishes and prayers. It is believed to bring 'uninterrupted prosperity and financial fortune,' 'unbroken good relationships and growth that connect people,' and 'continuous protection and safety.' For approximately 400 years, from the Edo period (1603-) to the present, these dragons have been revered and treasured as dragon deities due to their strong blessings and benefits, and belief in them continues to be passed down.

Keisuke Tejima, Kyoto One-Stroke Dragon Artist

Fascinated by dragons since childhood, he continues to paint them. Influenced by the spirit of the Japanese Way, which he learned during the 14 years of karate he practiced from age 6, he encountered the ancient "one-stroke dragon" technique. Deeply impressed by its history and methods, he felt it was his destiny and, believing this, mastered the technique through self-study. He preserves the tradition of one-stroke dragons passed down since the Edo period while pursuing dragons with the spirit of "shu-ha-ri" (learn, break, transcend).
He is one of only three one-stroke dragon artists in Japan. Although from Fukuoka Prefecture, a series of coincidences and inevitable good encounters led him, as if guided, to establish his atelier in Higashiyama, Kyoto, the "1,000-year capital" where dragon gods reside.
