What is Hitofude-ryu?

As the name suggests, Hitofude-ryu are dragons whose bodies are drawn with a single brushstroke, without interruption, while imbuing them with wishes and prayers. They are believed to bring 'uninterrupted prosperity and financial luck,' 'uninterrupted good fortune and growth, connecting people,' and 'continuous protection and safety.' For approximately 400 years, from the Edo period (1603-) to the present, these dragons have been revered and treasured as Dragon Gods, with their blessings and benefits considered extremely powerful, and have continued to be wished upon, believed in, and passed down through generations.

Kyoto Ichifude-ryu Artist / Keisuke Tejima

Fascinated by dragons since childhood, Keisuke Tejima continues to paint dragons. Influenced by the spirit of the Japanese Way, which he learned during his 14 years of Karate-do from age 6, he encountered the ancient art of "Ichifude-ryu" (one-stroke dragon painting). Deeply moved by its techniques and history, he felt it was his destiny and taught himself the techniques. He preserves the tradition of Ichifude-ryu, which dates back to the Edo period, while pursuing dragons with the spirit of "shu-ha-ri" (learn, break, transcend).
He is one of only three Ichifude-ryu artists in Japan. Originally from Fukuoka Prefecture, a series of coincidences and fated connections led him, as if guided, to establish his studio in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, the thousand-year-old capital where dragon gods reside.
