What is a Hitofude Dragon?

As the name suggests, a Hitofude Dragon is a dragon whose body is painted with a single brushstroke, without interruption, while praying and wishing, thereby symbolizing 'uninterrupted prosperity and financial luck,' 'uninterrupted good relationships and growth that connect people,' and 'continuous protection and safety.' For approximately 400 years, from the Edo period (1603-) to the present, these dragons have been revered and treasured as dragon deities, believed to grant strong blessings and benefits, and their legends continue to be passed down.

Kyoto One-Stroke Dragon Artist / Keisuke Tejima

Fascinated by dragons since childhood, he has continued to paint dragon art. Influenced by his 14 years of Karate-do training from age 6, where he learned the spirit of the Japanese way, he encountered the ancient art of "Hitofude-ryu" (one-stroke dragon painting). Deeply impressed by its techniques and history, he felt it was his destiny and devoted himself to mastering the technique through self-study. While preserving the tradition of Hitofude-ryu, which dates back to the Edo period, he pursues dragons with the spirit of "Shu-Ha-Ri" (learn, detach, transcend).
He is one of only three Hitofude-ryu artists said to exist in Japan. Although he is from Fukuoka Prefecture, due to a series of fortuitous and inevitable connections, he was led to establish his atelier in Higashiyama, Kyoto, the "city of a thousand years" where dragon deities reside.
