What is Hitofude-Ryu?

As the name suggests, a Hitofude-Ryu is a dragon whose body is painted with a single stroke of a brush, without interruption, while earnestly wishing and praying. It is believed to bring "uninterrupted prosperity and financial fortune," "continuous good relationships and growth, connecting people," and "sustained protection and safety." For approximately 400 years, from the Edo period (1603-) to the present, these dragons have been revered and treasured as dragon deities, with their blessings and benefits being incredibly powerful and continuously wished for, believed in, and passed down.

Keisuke Tejima, Kyoto One-Stroke Dragon Artist

Fascinated by dragons since childhood, he has continued to paint dragon art. Influenced by the spirit of the Japanese way that he learned during 14 years of Karate-do from age 6, he encountered the ancient "one-stroke dragon" technique. Deeply impressed by its history and methods, he believed it to be his life's calling and self-taught himself the technique. He upholds the tradition of one-stroke dragons, which dates back to the Edo period, while pursuing the essence of dragons with a spirit of "Shuhari" (learn, break, transcend).
He is one of only three one-stroke dragon artists in Japan. Although originally from Fukuoka Prefecture, due to a series of fortuitous and destined encounters, he was led to establish his atelier in Kyoto's Higashiyama Ward, the 1,000-year-old capital where dragon gods reside.
